What is causing mucus discharge from cat's nose, no appetite, weight loss?
13 yr old male Tabby housecat. End of May he sneezed – then his nasal passages got congested. He had a “crackling” sound when breathing and loud snorting/snoring noise. Vet put him on Amoxi drops – continued treatment until July. He had a senior wellness exam and geriatric panel run. Never ran fever and the blood panel results were very good for a cat his age He began having nasal mucus discharge from his nostrils and as he could not smell, his appetite greatly decreased. Vet prescribed Cyproheptadine (antihistamine) Amoxi drops had no good results, no appetite, mucus draining and clogging nostrals. Put him on Cefa drops- caused diarrhea.. Has anyone had similar problem?
What is diagnosis, is it curable or is this a chronic sinus condition in cats? I constantly clean the mucus from his nose with wet warm cloth to clear air passages so he can breathe and maybe smell enough to eat some food. Thank you for any response.

Mucus discharge from the nose & sneezing is a sign of upper respiratory disease. If he can’t smell because of this, in turn he will not eat & of course that results in the weight loss.
At this point I would recommend a 2nd opinion. If possible, find a vet who specializes in cats.
I agree this could also be allergy related, but would be more inclined to have him tested for luekemia and whatever other tests your new vet recommends. If he’s an outdoor cat, it’s very possible he picked up a disease. A chest xray is also in order. Cats DO get pneumonia and other lung disease.
In the meantime keep doing what you are doing to make him comfortable, and take the suggestion that someone else offered to vaporize him in a towel covered tent. You can also take him into a steamy bathroom. Both will help break up the congestion.
Hope this helps and good luck with your kitty!
Try another vet (2nd opinion).
It’s sick. Take it to the Vet!!!
awww… poor thing.
maybe it could be a sinus infection or some sort infection.
sorry that i’m not any help but i hope your cat well!
Take him to another vet. for a second opinion.
He might actually have allergies! Little old to just be starting that… anything new in the house, new carpet, new couch or bedding that he might be reacting to?
You can put him in a cage, then steam him just like a baby! I have had that work for several animals that had bad nasal congestion. Place the steam source just outside the cage, throw a towel over the whole thing to keep it in where kitty is. Couple of times a day for 30 minutes if it’s going to help you should see improvement in two or 3 days.
did this vet x-ray your cats chest? The crackling sound sounds like what you hear when there is fluid in the lungs.
A would certainly do what every one has already suggested and find a different vet.
your cat has a cold & it has to run it’s course & as for him not eating try moist food or samon. if that doesn’t work then take him back to your vet.
Mucus discharge by cats is about the same as by humans. Have you gotten any new household cleaners or some spray products. Spray products are especially bad as they put so much fumes into the air. Products like Pledge and Tide have been reported as giving off fumes that bother respiration functions. But since we have no controls over our products, other than to buy or not to buy, it is difficult to know what is really in them and causing respiration issues.
Suggest you cut down on sprays and any other products which gives off fumes. Change brands.
Good luck.
It is definitely an upper respiratory tract infection.. I doubt very much that it is an allergy. Back on the farm, we used to call it dystemper but I suspect that the vet you used is not correct and it cannot be cured by putting drops in its eyes, etc.
You need to seek another vet. Have them look at the lungs(pneumonia) or even possibly feline cancer. He is up there in age…
same thing with my ferret it died do to old age, but im not saying hes gonna die
If it were me, i’d take him & his medical records to a new vet office…. it’s never bad to get a 2nd opinion. Hate to say it but it sounds like your vet is just guessing.
I dont know, but Id take them to a vet, like NOW.
it has a stuffed noes maybe
