What causes habitual snoring and can it be something more serious?
My partner snores every night. I’ve been reading some of the questions about snoring on here to find ways of dealing with it, but they’ve left me quite worried as a lot of nurses etc have said snoring can be a sign of something more serious??
He’s only 30 and in good health, non-smoker, a healthy weight etc. It seems worse (& certainly louder!!) when he’s sleeping on his back. And he often says he wakes up with a sore throat as if he’s been snoring all night (and I’m like "yes… you were") lol.
what could be causing it & do we have reason to be worried? Any nurses out there?
Many thanks
Oh and after reading some of the oteh snoring questions on here I looked up sleep apnoea on Wikipedia, I don’t think it’s that as he doesn’t seem to stop breathing he just breathes VERY LOUDLY lol…

i use this product, snoreez . i mean its just a pillow but for some reason it can help you stop snoring and it actually does work. at least i worked for me. the good thing is that its not that expensive, like i’ve seen pillows up to 150 dollars to just fix snoring.
sleep apnoea can cause snoring – he should get it checked out by a doctor. he may need to be monitored at a sleep clinic
There are numerous causes of snoring.
Snoring is essentially partial blockage of the airway.
When you sleep on your back, your soft palate (soft muscles at roof of the back of your mouth) and tongue often relaxes and blocks off your airway causing people to snore.
Weight can be an issue as the fat around the neck compresses on your airways as well. However, this doesn’t seem like an issue here.
Some people can have micrognathia (small jaw) which also puts people at risk of snoring.
There are many other causes includes large tonsils (usually in kids), large tongue, etc.
Snoring is generally not a major problem (though it can be for people around them!), however, if it’s extremely severe, it -can- become sleep apnoea, regardless of the cause.
Sleep apnoea -as you may have read- often causes extreme tiredness despite sleeping, stirring constantly during sleep and frequent arousals from sleep due to the adrenaline waking them up from their apnoeic episodes. They may also need to go to the toilet frequently at night.
Snoring in general is quite a normal thing – especially for those who are getting older.
Sleeping on the side is probably advised initially, however if that doesn’t help, there are some plates that you place in your mouth to prevent the tongue and soft palate from slipping back but it probably isn’t that comfortable.
The best thing would probably be to see a doctor just to make sure that nothing is out of the ordinary (especially looking inside his throat). That aside, it should be quite harmless. =)
Alot of people seem to think that snoring only comes from the nasal passages.
So they go and buy products like nasal strips, nasal sprays, nasal dialators…. only problem is that a grat deal of problem snoring comes from the throat, and not the nasal passages.
There are a handful of products that address this issue – and one of them is a product called Slumber Guard.
Slumber Guard is sold in pharamcies across Australia.and is also available on the internet for worldwide delivery.
You should take a look at it – google it.
